Medi-Cal Benefits

Medi-Cal, California's version of Medicaid, is available to pay for a person's care in a skilled nursing facility if he or she satisfies all eligibility requirements. Although the Medi-Cal program technically is a poverty program, certain types of assets are not considered when determining whether a person is eligible to receive Medi-Cal benefits. Accordingly, proper advance planning can enable one to retain substantial assets and also be eligible to receive Medi-Cal benefits. There can be, however, significant penalties for improper transfers of assets.
