To practice Elder Law is to practice in the areas of the law that most affect senior citizens and their families. Such legal practice areas include Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning; Conservatorship; Probate; Trust Administration; Medi-Cal and other Public Benefits; and Elder Abuse; all of these practice areas are discussed in more detail on this website.
Practicing elder law requires empathy for the concerns and feelings of senior citizens and understanding of their desires, which normally include the desire to maintain dignity.
Elder Abuse
In California, Elder Abuse is either a type of physical abuse, including abandonment and isolation; financial abuse; or neglect against a senior citizen or other disabled dependent adult that results in physical harm or pain and suffering.
Strong remedies are available for Elder Abuse. Such remedies include compensation for pain and suffering, punitive damages, and payment of attorney's fees to prosecute the case.
Elder Abuse is a crime. Accordingly, such an abuser can be prosecuted and sent to jail.
